How to enhance meditation practice?

Becoming a master of your own mind is the common goal of all self-development practices. By observing your habits, by listening to your thoughts, by being true to yourself you take control of your life. Conscious listening as a form of meditation is the key to well being.

I will share with you two simple practices that helped me to become a conscious listener. I find them as a good tool in training the “inner observer” muscle, they also are an excellent aid to achieve tranquility. Practicing these simple techniques had taught me to become more present, to control the energy in my body, and even choose and control my thoughts and emotions.

These exercises are NOT authentic Tibetan or Yogic practices, or maybe they are. I did not pick them up from any school or any teacher. The singing bowls taught me to practice these exercises!

First, let's explore what it means to be a conscious listener:

If you can concentrate your focus right now on the audible sounds that your ears are registering (the frequencies coming from the surrounding environment), plus focus on the effect these audible and inaudible frequencies have on your body (listen with your body) and at the same time concentrate your focus on the voice within you (the voice that is sounding your thoughts), then - you are a conscious listener.

Emotion - energy in motion.

One night during my diet with sacred plants, I was meditating by listening to the sounds of the jungle with my whole body. It was a peaceful night near Iquitos Peru, I felt the multilayered cricket's sound penetrate and heal all areas of my body. Suddenly there was a roaring sound of a wild cat passing by my tambo. Immediately, I registered this sound with my belly. It felt like my stomach was a quiet pond with a still surface of water a second ago, and the roaring sound was like a stone falling into that pound. I was able to "turn this signal off" before the circles on the water expanded and reached any further physical response, before this signal evoked an emotion. I was present enough to remain still. The cat peacefully passed by really close to my shelter. I sent her my regards.

Listen to your body to identify where and which emotion is being physically reflected. Fear is usually felt in the lower area of the stomach and legs. Joy is reflected as a feeling of expansion in the chest and openness in the throat. Worry is generally reflected as a tide-like feeling in the chest.  Sexual excitement – reflects in your genitals. Feeling proud - clarity in the head. When you feel love and excitement - the whole body is vibrating.
